Gabriel Kahan is a PhD student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He conducts research in political sociology, development, and finance.

His current research follows two broad agendas. The first agenda draws on mixed methods to evaluate state-led decarbonization. Here he has analyzed the effects of green industrial policy on multinational emitters and written on the derisking of energy transitions in the Global South. Currently, he is completing a dissertation project comparing France’s postwar efforts in industrial planning with current experiments in "ecological planning" under the country's National Low-Carbon Strategy.

The second agenda centers on “financial democracy” — the project of broadening participation in financial systems to ensure accountability and autonomy. Currently, he is conducting a comparative study on the governance structure of public asset managers. Time permitting, he hopes to expand on this work by investigating how financial systems become legible as sites of political struggle.
